Gray Monk Estate Winery, established in 1972 by George and Trudy Heiss, is a pioneering winery located in Lake Country, British Columbia, within the Okanagan Valley. The winery is renowned for introducing Pinot Gris to Canada, a varietal known as “Grauer Mönch” in Austria, which inspired the winery’s name. Their early adoption of cool-climate viticulture laid the foundation for the province’s Estate Winery program and significantly contributed to the development of British Columbia’s wine industry.
Situated on a hillside overlooking Okanagan Lake, Gray Monk Estate Winery encompasses 25 acres of vineyards. The winery specializes in aromatic white wines, particularly Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, and Ehrenfelser, which thrive in the region’s cool-climate conditions. In addition to these whites, the estate produces a variety of red wines, including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec, offering a diverse portfolio that showcases the versatility of the Okanagan terroir.
Visitors to Gray Monk can experience wine tastings in a picturesque setting, with panoramic views of the vineyards and lake. The winery also offers guided tours, providing insights into the winemaking process and the history of the estate. The on-site restaurant, The Lookout, serves a menu that complements the winery’s offerings, enhancing the overall visitor experience. Gray Monk Estate Winery continues to be a significant contributor to British Columbia’s wine industry, combining tradition with innovation to produce wines that reflect the unique character of the Okanagan Valley.
